February 27, 2011

From the NEWS desk of Tom Mongelli:
Jon Runyan is doing a ton of homework. A year ago he didn’t appear to have a clue about the issues affecting his district or the world. Thursday night, he spoke equally fluently about fishing restrictions, oil exploration, Middle East unrest and its ramifications, the Performance Tax and the Patriot Act, among other things. He has a lot to accomplish in a short time, but at least now Millennium listeners can understand what it all means to them at the kitchen table.

State Senator Andy Ciesla leaves the Legislature at the end of this year. He’s supporting his Assembly colleague Jim Holzapfel, former Ocean County prosecutor, for the position. Brick Councilwoman Ruthanne Scaturro and Toms River Council President Greg McGuckin are the early entrants for the open Assembly seat.

Other points of interest on the horizon:

· Sunday 2/27 - Green Party convention, Asbury Park

· Tuesday 3/1 – NJ Coastal Heritage Trail preservation hearings, Monmouth County; second session in Ocean County later in the month

· Thursday 3/3 – Monmouth budget public hearing, Shrewsbury ($496 Million)

· Friday 3/4 – Fort Monmouth Redevelopment Forum sponsored by Trenton-based NJ Future

· Sunday 3/6 – Jenkinson’s Job Fair, Point Pleasant Beach – NJ Department of Labor & Workforce Development

· Thursday 3/10 – NJ Dept. of Environmental Protection Public Session for Ocean County future development, Toms River. They’re mapping out where the sewer systems will go. Good news for Ed Norton.

When was the peace treaty ending World War 2 signed?

There was no single pact signed to end the war.

In Asia, the Japanese forces signed 'unconditional' surrender terms with MacArthur, recorded with that famous picture, aboard the battleship Missouri, in Tokyo harbor. That ended the formal fighting between American and Japanese forces but some incidental fighting continued for years. Additionally the USSR did not sign a treaty for many years after....I don't recall those details. The actual peace treaty between the U.S. and Japan was signed in 1951.

In Europe it was more confusing. Germany collapsed economically and militarily in the spring of 1945. Hitler was dead. The government essentially non existent. There was a military occupation set up by the victors. Treaties ending the fighting were not signed for about ten years although all organized fighting ended almost immediately upon the surrender via Doenitz in May 1945, who, in theory, was the head of the rump German armed forces and government.

Italy had surrended to the Allies in 1943 and then changed sides to fight Germany, taking many casualties in the process. The end of that formal combat situation was in 1945 also but when an actual treaty was signed, I do not know. Other Axis nations also changed sides when the end of Germany was in sight. Finland, her economy collapsing, withdrew from organized fighting in late 1944 and then declared war on Germany. So did Romania. Bulgaria never actually declared war on any Allied nation that I know of so there was never any treaty to sign. Hungary collapsed in 1945 along with Germany.

Basically a formal state of war existed between Germany and the various Allied nations until about 1949 although obviously all combat operations had ended many years previously. By 1954, Stalin was dead, the German government reorganized (east and west), and the German economy stabilized and growing. POWs, both German and Japanese were just being released about this time in large numbers by the Soviets.

Although I've never seen a full reckoning I suspect some nations never actually signed a treaty ending the war with Germany - for examples, perhaps Brazil or Costa Rica.

January 06, 2011

From the NEWS desk of Tom Mongelli:
The circumstances under which three young people perished in Pine Beach this week may be more than a police story. Some who were close to them speculate that they had difficulty facing the challenge of life. If that’s so, and if it leads to improved communication between generations, then some good will develop from the tragedy.

Here’s a glimpse at what’s ahead:

· The only shore-based public hearing on a proposal to build a LNG terminal off the Asbury coast takes place Wednesday 2/9 in Long Branch. There’s one a day earlier in Rockaway Beach NY and another a day later in Edison. All three areas figure in Liberty Natural Gas plans.

· Sustainable Energy and Economy Conference, Monmouth University, Friday 2/11.

· Southern Ocean Idol auditions, Lacey Township HS, Saturday 2/12.

· Mayors’ Anti-Gang Summit, Beachwood, Tuesday 2/15.

· Ask The Governor & Ask The Congressman, back to back, Thursday 2/24. Also, the Monmouth County budget introduction.

· Bill Dressel, League of Municipalities, speaks to Ocean County Mayors about the unending financial struggle, Friday 2/25. Also, Brookdale Community College Job Fair.

As you may be aware by now, Jason Allentoff survived a fairly hellacious car crash just before dawn Sunday in Bayville.
Jason was driving southbound on Route 9 when his car was hit by another one entering the highway from a sidestreet. The impact was on the passenger side and deployed both front-seat airbags. It also, as he describes it, resulted in considerable front-end damage for his car.

Jason’s nursing black-and-blue discolorations along his right side. His neck is stiff enough to prevent him from turning his head. He also has numerous scrapes on his hands and may have also sustained some knee damage.

He wants everyone to know that he’s following doctor’s orders to the letter.
