Welcome the first full day of SPRING!

From the News desk of Tom Mongelli:

Supporters of the federal health-care reform bill say it'll widen access for millions of Americans. Opponents say it'll also cost us an arm and a leg and victimize the elderly. Our Congressman, John Adler, casts a "No" ballot during Sunday's House vote. Next month, he kicks off a diner tour throughout the third Congressional district.
An ordinance in Berkeley would require company trucks, cars and vans decorated with logos to be parked away from roadsides. Mayor Jason Varano says it's led to all sorts of improvised signage and left vehicles in place for weeks and even months. Merchants say it's anti-business. The Council meets Tuesday.
New pollution concerns surround the Barnegat Bay watershed. Stan Hailes at the Barnegat Bay National Estuary Program says that the march of development means more paving - meaning more stormwater runoff - and more toxins in the bay.
The pioneering municipal wind turbine in Ocean Gate meets its first enemies. Homeowners nearby say it's ugly, noisy and destroying their quality of life. Mayor Paul Kennedy says it's saving them boatloads of money on energy. He's scheduling an airing of grievances soon.
New Jersey Resources starts a solar-panel leasing program to turn alternative energy into an affordable commodity for homeowners.
Toms River School District's public hearing on the 2010-2011 budget next Friday at High School South. They expect to have almost 10-Million dollars less in state aid to cushion the costs. Not a whole lot of cheeriness in the room that night.
Jackson Mayor Mike Reina stages a senior property tax freeze seminar next Friday at Town Hall.

From the News desk of Tom Mongelli:

Local elected officials and school superintendents are bracing for Governor Christie's Tuesday budget address. Unquestionably, there will be pain - either in service cuts, job reductions or higher property taxes.
What's going to become of the acreage housing Fort Monmouth? A state legislative bill that would create subtle changes in the Fort Monmouth Revitalization Planning Authority is creating some unease among local officials, especially in Oceanport. A public hearing is scheduled in the near future.
Lakewood Community Services Corporation launches its six-week Entrepreneurial Training Institute. People who want to start their own businesses find out if they've got the real commitment it'll take, with support from LCSC, Union County Economic Development Corp, SCORE, and the SBA. Starts Thursday in the Lakewood Municipal Building.
Monmouth Freeholders push back a vote on their nearly half-Billion dollar budget to March 25th. The American democratic two-party system at levels of dysfunction usually reserved for Washington.
Now that Toms River businessman Joe Rullo has launched his campaign to overtake Jon Runyan for the right to run for Congress as a Republican against John Adler this fall, he wants debates. We're going to start those wheels in motion. Runyan's people are shielding him to a certain extent, presumably until he becomes more familiar with local issues. Rullo won't stop talking, as long as his window of opportunity is open.
Fan Fest time at First Energy Park - Lakewood Blueclaws tickets go on sale Saturday. Woo-hoo!
If you're interested in Community Emergency Response Team training through the Ocean County OEM, let me know. They're starting a new round of classes in April.

From the News desk Of Tom Mongelli:

Tuesday night's Stafford Township Council meeting should be a winner. Police Chief Tom Conroy delivers a diatribe to the governing body as five officers pack their bags to leave the force March 31st - layoff victims in a cost-cutting move that Conroy says will haunt the township later.
Lakewood's business redevelopment boot camp continues Monday as hopeful new entrepreneurs learn the ins and outs of financing. It's in the Lakewood Municipal Building at 7 pm.
Ocean County's new budget goes to a public hearing and final vote Wednesday - the first spending plan to raise the tax rate in yeeeeeears. Doesn't bode well for the future if the economy doesn't turn around.
United Water Toms River holds a public hearing on yet another rate hike on the 8th in the Berkeley Township Municipal Building. Hey, we're paying so much already, what's another $13 dollars a month? In contrast, United Water just got a good-neighbor award from Oceans Of Love - its former enemy.
Political power-brokers tilt the scales toward former Eagle Jon Runyan in the battle to find an opponent who can beat John Adler for the District 3 Congressional seat this November. Toms River Councilman Mo Hill and Ocean Township Mayor Joe Lacaweicz are out. Businessman Joe Rullo says they'll have to drag him out of the race by the hair.
