From the NEWS desk of To Mongelli:
We're watching the Gulf oil spill along with state environmental operatives and shore tourism leaders. If it moves up the coast, it could have serious consequences for the state economy and ecology beyond those that already exist.

All of Governor Christie's budget constraint recommendations looked great back in January. Can you believe the PR spin that "shared sacrifice" is getting? A TV ad I saw implies that if your town has rampant crime, houses burning down and 100 kids to a classroom, it's the Governor's fault. What next, he was the second shooter on the grassy knoll?

Interesting events take place every day this coming week:

Monday, former Eagle and current Congressional hopeful Jon Runyon fields questions from the WOBM News team and listeners for a full hour at 2 on WOBM-AM. Dan Alexander and Tom Trembly will once again set up a live video and audio web stream.
On WOBMAM.com and 1160 WOBM AM @ 2 pm

Tuesday in Toms River, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission presents its annual safety assessment of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant. It'll be at the Holiday Inn.
Earlier that same day in Eatontown, Assemblywoman Mary Pat Angelini conducts a forum about children's protection at the borough Municipal Building. Stands to reason that Prevention First, the organization she pilots, is involved as well.

Wednesday in Seaside Heights, the Jersey Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau teams with RADD for a campaign called "Get Real." It combines tourism with traffic-oriented social responsibility...in other words, drive on down to the shore, but don't text while you're doing it. And go ahead and drink, but give someone else the car keys.

Thursday in Sandy Hook, it's the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium's eighth annual State Of The Shore, announcing the winners of the NJ Top Ten Beaches survey. It's in the Seagull's Nest Beach Bar, Parking Area D.

Friday in Toms River, Ocean County's Older Adults in Traffic Safety mark their 20th year of voluntarism in finding solutions for safer highways. It's actually more productive than bingo, and still gets them over to the Holiday City Diner in time for the early-bird specials.

Is a form of Falklands nationalism, made up of the many facets of our community activities, identity and culture. Indeed our very own Constitution provides for "Falklandisation" to evolve.

From the NEWS Desk of Tom Mongelli

If you've encountered difficulties with the US Census, let me know. The Ocean County Complete Count Committee meets Tuesday, and they should know about the inefficiencies. Then they'll have 10 years to refine it. Don't be too angry with the folks who visit or call you. They're temps, most getting the first work they've had in months, and most are out of a job again by mid-summer.

Details emerge next week in the death of Darnell Myres of Manchester at Monmouth Medical Center, after a scuffle with security at Community. Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel is being extra careful about crossing every 't' and dotting every 'i.'

Ocean County Health Department is having trouble convincing people to get free stroke assessments May 26th at the headquarters in Toms River. If you haven't been checked, it isn't a bad idea, especially if you smoke, have high blood pressure, diabetes or heart trouble, or if you're age 55 or older.

Get married on a tall ship on LBI. Southern Ocean County Chamber is giving away a wedding ceremony on the AJ Meerwald when it sails in on July 24th. They're supplying the officiator, photographer and invitations.

Republican Congressional primary for the Third District is June 8th. Check ou Justin Murphy's views at wobm.com or wobmam.com. Then hold that thought until May 24th, when Jon Runyon sits down with us for his hour in the hot seat. Thanks, Dan Alexander and Tom Trembly, for the webcast, by the way.

In case you missed it, Congressman John Adler has an opponent in the June 8 primary. Barry Bendar, the Lacey Democratic Chairman, campaigned for Adler in '08 and now thinks it was a big mistake.

MODC Legislative Reception,, May 19th, Breakers in Spring Lake. Good networking opportunity and a chance for face time with your Trenton lawmakers.
On May 23rd, there's a public meeting to find ways of improving New Jersey's foster care system in Eatontown. Shore state lawmakers Mary Pat Angelini and Declan O'Scanlon run it at the Municipal Building at 3 pm.
Hold your ears in Ocean County June 1st. Exelon conducts its semi-annual siren test (all 43 of 'em) for the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plan. There's a long blast at 10 am and a short one at 1 pm.

Radio on the beach in the summertime. It doesn't get any better than that!

Happy Mothers day!

From the NEWS desk of Tom Mongelli:

Lawrence Taylor is the big news today...but the corruption trial of former Ocean County Assemblyman Dan Van Pelt, now that's entertainment!

He's accused of taking $10,000 from Solomon Dwek to speed approvals for a Waretown project that was completely fabricated. He says it was a consulting fee. Jay Pierce notes, "Okay, so if you're a consultant, where's the damn invoice?"

As this goes out, Stacy Proebstle is skydiving with the US Army Golden Knights at McGuire - 14,000-foot plunge at 120 mph. Watch for video at our websites. Elsewhere...

Lakewood becomes Ocean County's second community to enter the Live Where You Work Program through the NJ Division of Community Affairs. Monday at the Municipal Building.

Republican Congressional candidate Justin Murphy spends an hour at WOBM Tuesday, stating his case to challenge John Adler in November. It starts at 6 pm. Jon Runyan appears on 5/24.

Adler is shrugging off a Democratic primary challenge from Lacey Township Democratic Chair Barry Bendar. Bendar collected just over 300 signatures to reach the ballots - about 100 more than he needed - indicating the state of Ocean County's Democratic Party.

DEP conducts a coastal resources summit Tuesday at Monmouth University. Bob Martin is paying a great deal of attention to the shore, its management and its health.

Tuesday is also a day for nonpartisan elections in Jackson, Beach Haven, Island Heights and Manchester. In Monmouth, its Long Branch, Bradley Beach and Keansburg.

May 2, 2010

From the NEWS desk of Tom Mongelli:
Facebook becomes a spawning ground for opponents of Toms River Schools Superintendent Mike Ritacco. Even if he faces no charges, the attention of the FBI and IRS has given them a focus for their anger against a political structure tp which they connect him.

Jury selection in the trial of former Ocean County Assemblyman Dan Van Pelt starts Monday, May 3. He pleaded not guilty after his arrest in last July's federal corruption sweep.

The builders of the Ocean Gate Municipal Wind Turbine visit the borough Monday night to get an earful from nearby homeowners who can't stand the noise it's generating. Mayor Paul Kennedy, who developed the idea, will be on a cruise with his family - but will call from the boat to attend by phone. Whatta guy!

Republican Congressional underdog Justin Murphy spends an hour at WOBM explaining why he should replace John Adler in Washington. This takes place at 6 pm on May 11th. The favorite, Jon Runyan, is scheduled for May 24th, 2 pm.

The first week of May is Be Kind To Animals Week, nationwide.

Nonpartisan elections of note on May 11th. In Ocean County, this means Jackson, Manchester, Beach Haven and Island Heights.
Also on the 11th, proposed changes to the Coastal Area Facility Review Act undergo a public meeting at Monmouth University. You may be more familiar with the acronym CAFRA - the permit that determines development at the shore. NJ DEP runs the meeting.

School officials with voter-rejected budgets must reach new figures with their municipal leaders by May 19th.
