August 29, 2010

From the NEWS desk of Tom Mongelli:

Here is the short view from the newsroom as September arrives:
School starts in Wednesday 9/1 in Toms River. Schools all over the state get rolling between 9/1 and 9/7. Open Forum, WOBM-AM, Back To School Edition, tentative for 9/15, featuring a clash over the future of the Central Regional district.

September is Hunger Action Month. FoodBank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties is sending out a big SOS, as are support charities all over the state. With the unemployment rate still hovering just under 10 percent in NJ, the need hasn't abated. BTW - if you add in those who have run out of benefits and still aren't working, the figure is closer to 17 percent.
-

Jon Runyan drums up some Ocean County support for his Congressional run 9/5 at Veterans Park in Bayville. If you've got $2400 to spare, you can have your photo taken with Governor Chri-tie!

The Joint Base has become mighty public-friendly under the current regime. The Beast Of The East, a 10K mud run, is scheduled for 9/11, open to the public. Registration stays open 'til 9/3.
The irony of a festive occasion at a military base on 9/11 isn't lost on us. We'll be checking with folks in Middletown, Brick and other shore spots where WTC commuters never returned nine years ago, to see if the wounds are healing.

From the NEWS desk of Tom Mongelli:
Long Beach officials have until summer's end, essentially, to round up the stragglers who haven't signed DEP access easements so the Army Corps can start restoring the beaches under the federal plan. Mayor Joe Mancini has posted the names and addresses of the holdouts on the township web page, the 21st-century version of being placed in the stocks in the town square.
.
Toms River officials are expected to take action on a request from the Trust for Public Land to partially-fund acquisition of the Camp Albacondo site. It would essentially create about 80 acres of park and open space from the edge of downtown to the Manchester border.
.
Get up close to history. This Wednesday at Monmouth Executive Airport in Wall, the Collings Foundation of Massachusetts is bringing in a B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, P-51 Mustang and other aircraft that helped win World War II. They'll give tours and some short hops around the area.
.
Toxin remediation: Med-Assure Services LLC has conditional county approval to set up a medical-waste treatment and transfer site in the Lakewood Industrial Park. In West Creek, folks who live near a patch of wetlands are wary of a DEP proposal to dump and store dredge spoils on state land. As one homeowner told me, "This isn't Not-In-My-Backyard. It's Not-In-My-FRONT yard."

We Interrupt This Blog...

Hello,

My name is Dan Alexander, the Program Director of New Media for Millennium Radio New Jersey and responsible for much of the content on our company websites and blogs.

The Topic A blog is intended to be a place where Bob's producer Paul posts links, news stories and pictures referenced on the show for everyone to easily find. Listener comment, both positive and negative, is welcome. Like the show, it can be anonymous and unscreened.

However, recent comments that attack Bob have gone beyond the intent of the blog. Attacks on the host and other callers (bloggers) would not be tolerated for long on the air and they will not be tolerated here.

Recent rude comments directed towards other bloggers are not acceptable. You are a guest here; please act accordingly.

Dan

From the NEWS desk of Tom Mongelli:

Water quality in NJ watersheds is up for discussion when the Assembly and state Senate environment committees hold a joint meeting at Toms River Town Hall this Thursday. Assemblyman Jack McKeon and state Senator Bob Smith are pushing a package of bills aimed at stanching the flow of pollution into watersheds including Barnegat Bay.
Critics of Beachwood Mayor Ron Jones fumed while he held court on WOBM's Open Forum last month. So, true to the concept, they'll have their say this Wednesday. Jones escaped a third (!) attempt to recall him from office. Also on the program is Jackson Mayor Mike Reina, who's piloting the township through heavy swells in a sea of red ink.
American Cancer Society marks 20 years of the National Cervical and Breast Cancer Screening program with free clinics in Toms River and Red Bank, this Tuesday.
Ocean Gate Day, August 14th. The biggest little town in Ocean County marks the annual event with the dedication of a new park built entirely by volunteers, and a rock band on the Wildwood Avenue pier at night.
Vets who may be missing out on benefits they've earned can find out this week from DAV. Staffers will be in Tinton Falls Wednesday, Brick Township Friday and Lakewood Saturday.
