From the News desk of Tom Mongelli:
Supporters of the federal health-care reform bill say it'll widen access for millions of Americans. Opponents say it'll also cost us an arm and a leg and victimize the elderly. Our Congressman, John Adler, casts a "No" ballot during Sunday's House vote. Next month, he kicks off a diner tour throughout the third Congressional district.
An ordinance in Berkeley would require company trucks, cars and vans decorated with logos to be parked away from roadsides. Mayor Jason Varano says it's led to all sorts of improvised signage and left vehicles in place for weeks and even months. Merchants say it's anti-business. The Council meets Tuesday.
New pollution concerns surround the Barnegat Bay watershed. Stan Hailes at the Barnegat Bay National Estuary Program says that the march of development means more paving - meaning more stormwater runoff - and more toxins in the bay.
The pioneering municipal wind turbine in Ocean Gate meets its first enemies. Homeowners nearby say it's ugly, noisy and destroying their quality of life. Mayor Paul Kennedy says it's saving them boatloads of money on energy. He's scheduling an airing of grievances soon.
New Jersey Resources starts a solar-panel leasing program to turn alternative energy into an affordable commodity for homeowners.
Toms River School District's public hearing on the 2010-2011 budget next Friday at High School South. They expect to have almost 10-Million dollars less in state aid to cushion the costs. Not a whole lot of cheeriness in the room that night.
Jackson Mayor Mike Reina stages a senior property tax freeze seminar next Friday at Town Hall.
